Mark Noll on American Christianity and the World

June 8, 2009 – 11:09 am

Mark Noll, Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at Notre Dame , is a leading historian of evangelicalism. His most recent work, The New Shape of World Christianity: How American Experience Reflects Global Faith (IVP, 2009), should be of particular interest to church planting and missions gurus.

In order for us to plant God-honoring, indigenous churches it is necessary to distinguish between irreducible, biblical principles and flexible, contextualized practices. Resources like this book can help our sharpen our accuracy in making this distinction.

Justin Taylor, editor for Crossway Books and blogger at Between Two Worlds, interviewed Noll about the book. A couple of JT’s questions to which Noll offers a response:

Why is American Christianity important for the world?

What have been some of the personal challenges and encouragements that you have received as a result of immersing yourself in this study of the new shape of world Christianity?
