Muslim Demographics Video: Reviewed
June 4, 2009 – 5:18 pmMany of you have seen, or at least heard of, the YouTube Muslim Demographics video circulating via blogs and email. Currently, it has been viewed 8.5 million times.
It offers a compelling argument that Muslims are overwhelming countries (particularly Western - and more specifically European - countries) due to higher birth rates than other citizens. It piles statistic on top of statistic and forces the viewer to consider the potential dangers that exist.
Five missions researches have offered a scholarly critique at the Network for Strategic Missions website. The researchers include:
- Jason Mandryk (Operation World)
- Jim Haney (International Mission Board)
- Peter Crossing (World Christian Database)
- Patrick Johnstone (Operation World)
- Bert Hickman (Center for the Global Study of Christianity, World Christian Database).

It is important that we approach resources like this video with a balanced, fact-based perspective. Emotion ought not drive our conclusions about missions or any other area of life and ministry.
Just as Paul explained that the Ephesian elders were to build up the body so that they would not be “children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine” (Eph 4:14), so we must guard against making hasty conclusions based on a quick viewing of one video or article.
The same applies to blogs, books, and other forms of media. We would do well to emulate the Berean believers who “received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so” (Acts 17:11).
