Voting as a Child of God
October 27, 2008 – 5:49 pmIn light of the approaching election, and a previous MM post about the gratitude we Americans ought to have for our political system, I trust that these two resources will be helpful to you.
Last night, Pas. David Doran preached a message entitled “A Christian Conscience in the Voting Booth” with the purpose of laying out the biblical grounds for government and our responsibility as children of God to exercise judgment and discernment (which implies that we must exercise our freedom to vote) when we vote November 4. After reading Genesis 9:6 (”Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of God He made man.”), Pastor Doran clearly articulated “that there is no more fundamental issue at stake in this election than the issue of human life.” The two primary battle grounds in our day are abortion and embryonic stem-cell research.
On a similar note, Pas. John Piper wrote an article last Wednesday entitled “Let Christians Vote As Though They Were Not Voting” in which he follows the outline of 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 in pointing out that we ought not let our hope and joy ride or fall on this election:
“This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.” 1 Corinthians 7:29-31(italics mine)
In case you might wonder why this post is tagged as a “World Issue,” you ought to visit the major world news sources based in other countries and see how much coverage this election is receiving. It has and will have an affect on our world and those desiring to minister the gospel in other countries.
