200k Congolese Forced From Their Homes
October 24, 2008 – 5:32 pmGENEVA, Switzerland (AP) — The World Food Program says fighting in eastern Congo’s province of North Kivu has driven around 200,000 people from their homes since August.
The United Nations earlier had reported half that number of people were displaced recently in the eastern area, where fighters loyal to warlord Laurent Nkunda skirmish regularly with militia groups and the army.
The new director for WFP’s Geneva office says between 1.4 million and 2 million people are displaced in North Kivu. The figure includes those uprooted from earlier waves of fighting since 2007.
